Jamshedpur, along with the adjoining industrial area of Adityapur, is the industrial hub of the state of Jharkhand. Jamshedpur and Adityapur together form the Industrial nerve-centre of Jharkhand, and is often referred to as the industrial and business capital of Jharkhand. Thanks to the economy generated by a number of Tata Companies led by Tata Steel and Tata Motors, today Jamshedpur embraces a wide spectrum of large and small scale industries and a flourishing supporting service sector.

The city has a well defined boundary and is bound by the Suvarnarekha river on the north, the Kharkai river on the west, the Bengal-Nagpur Railway on the south, and the Tata Steel works and other companies on the east. The standard of living in a city that is almost isolated from the mess in the rest of the country is quite good. The Tata companies, led by Tata Steel have been successful in spreading the message of hope and goodness in a state which is at the bottom of the list when it comes to development and progress and where not much is hoped/expected from the government.

Jamshedpur came into existence way back in 1908 and had remained a quiet industrial township for several years with sparse traffic on the roads and local activities centred on its industrious work culture. Today, the town has got busier but the values haven't changed much. Despite a large steel plant located right at the centre of the city, thanks to the environment management efforts of Tata Steel, the city gleams with greenery and the air is much purer than most other industrial cities in India.
